Intellectual Curiosity and Action

Swampscott High School's Hannah Rosen is this week's Whiz Kid. She is a young woman for all seasons.

AP Calculus teacher Russell King tells this story about student Hannah Rosen:

"Over this past winter break Hannah visited the Boston Public Library to gather literary criticism for an English paper and to search for old calculus books.  She and a few classmates had previously discussed how old math books were convoluted and hard to understand.

She wanted to see for herself, so she found two calculus books from the 1960s and signed them out.
A look through the musty math texts did indeed show Hannah that the books were wordier.

But, the old books also went into more detail than current math textbooks.  To her surprise, Hannah found the chronological presentation of calculus in "Calculus Techniques for Home Study," interesting and useful.

Rather than turn her off, the additional detail engaged her intellectually."

There is something engaging about books, libraries and searching for information.

But Hannah's interests are broad.

They include track and field, community service including volunteering at My Brother's Table in Lynn, the Spanish language, international relations and political action.

Her interests reflect energy and enthusiasm, a combination that can move mountains and make life satisfying.

When she goes to college next year she wants to major in biomedical engineering with a minor Spanish.

Here are some of Hannah's favorites.

Favorite Book: A Separate Peace.

Favorite Movie: The World is Not Enough (James Bond Series).

Favorite food: Bananas and cereal.

Favorite Musician (band): The Beatles.

For her varied interests and involvements, Hannah Rosen is our Whiz Kid.
