High School Garden Gets Gift From Eastern Bank

The local bank donated $1,000 to the school's garden program.

The Swampscott High learning garden took a big step Monday when Eastern Bank handed organizers a $1,000 check.

The help arrived at an opportune time.

Over summer crews had dug pathways that wend by the garden's raised planters and the future site of an outdoor classroom.

The paths are dug but remain empty, scattered with weeds and clumps of soil.

Without funds to buy and install building material and pavers the walkway portion of the project came to a standstill.

Garden project coordinators Joe Bennett and Brandy Wilbur said the $1,000 donation might be used to help construct the walkways.

Joe hopes to see the garden in full learning mode by some time in October.

On Monday the SHS teachers gave a tour of the garden to Laura King. Eastern Bank Vice President for the bank's Swampscott branch.

Laura said the bank donates 10 percent of its income to nonprofits and it especially likes to support school programs such as the Swampscott garden, located at the back of the school.
