Hadley Was Dry and Ready For Classes Wednesday

The superintendent answered concerns about mold and conditions at Hadley School following Tuesday's flash flood.

Flooding in boiler room and a portion of its cafeteria did not spur mold production, the superintendent said on Wednesday.

Parents of Hadley School children worried about the 100-year-old school's condition after classes were cancelled Tuesday due to the early-morning flash flood, said School Committee member Rick Kraft.

School reopened on Wednesday.

Superintendent Lynne Celli said the boiler room was pumped out Tuesday and the cafeteria was dried with a wet vacuum, floor fans and other means.

The district's plumbing inspector supervised the operation and certified that school was ready to reopen, Celli said.

The inspector, Peter McCarriston, said water was not standing long enough for mold to build up, she said.

The cafeteria was dry by 2:30 pm, said School Business Manager Ed Cronin.

The business manager reported that the high school's loading dock area flooded on Tuesday.

Damaged items included a snowblower and tools.

Hadley was the only school that shut down on Tuesday. The other schools in town opened after a two-hour delay.
