Hadley Exterior to be Inspected

Small pieces of concrete have fallen to the ground twice in the past 10 days. A structural engineer reported that the broken pieces are from the eaves area and do not affect the building's structural integrity, according to the superintendent of schools.

Small pieces of concrete have fallen to the ground twice in the past 10 days at.

Most recently, on Wednesday, broken pieces were discovered by the entrance,  the superintendent of schools said at Wednesday's School Committee meeting.

A structural engineer reported that the broken pieces do not affect the building's structural integrity, Superintendent Lynne Celli said.

Celli said the broken concrete came from decorative elements— ornamental as opposed to structural — at the top of the building by the eaves.

The superintendent said she responded to the school after the concrete was first discovered and that an emergency exit plan was put in place as a precaution.

She said the broken pieces do not pose a safety risk.

District Business Manager Ed Cronin said in an interview that the pieces were small.

The district has hired a bucket truck and will inspect the entire exterior, he said.

Repair work to the 100-year-old school's exterior will start after the wet weather stops, Cronin said.
