Former SHS Student and Veteran Back Playing Lacrosse in College

Samuel Johnson was in Afghanistan for much of last year but will be defending on the lacrosse field for Clark this spring.

 

Samuel Johnson, 23, was a member of the Swampscott High lacrosse team back in 2007, and the Clark University defensemen is back on the lacrosse field this spring.

But for much of last year he was part of the national defense with the Massachusetts Army National Guard in Afghanistan.

Josh Field, Swampscott High’s lacrosse coach, spoke to the Boston Globe on Thursday about the former Swampscott High lacrosse standout. 

“Truthfully, I wasn’t surprised that Sam chose the military," Field told the Globe. "I knew he’d take full opportunity, when he got back and finished his military obligations, to get his college degree. And I’m delighted to know he’s continuing to play lacrosse.’’

Private First Class Johnson is a specialist with Bravo Company, First Battalion, 182d Infantry. He was deployed last March, serving seven months in the Khost Province of Afghanistan as part of a multi-disciplinary security force, the newspaper reported.

Swampscott High lacrosse players will soon be preparing for their season.

They were tournament team last year and were a tournament team during Johnson's senior year. 

Clark University lost their season opener on Tuesday, 10-9, playing Catholic University in Clearwater, Fla.
