Five Things You Need to Know Today: March 15

The first Swampscott High School Fine Arts Festival and Multi-Cultural Food Sampling is tonight beginning at 7 p.m. at Swampscott High School.

 

1) Newsbit of the Day: First Annual Swampscott High School Fine Arts Festival and Multi-Cultural Food Sampling tonight beginning at 7 p.m. at Swampscott High School. 

The evening will begin with performances by the SHS World Drumming Ensemble, the SHS Concert Band and the SHS Percussion Ensemble.  During intermission, enjoy an art show in the high school atrium featuring pieces created by SHS art students.

In the cafeteria, enjoy a multi-cultural food tasting.  Following the intermission, special guests, The SOS Big Band of Rhode Island, will perform jazz and swing music from the 30's and 40's to modern day. 

Doors open at 6:30.  Admission to this wonderful event is free, but donations for the Swampscott Patrons of the Performing Arts (POPS), which is sponsoring this event, will be accepted.

2) Swampscott Scholars: Drew University student Anastasia L. Rutkowski of Swampscott, MA, has been named to the Dean's List for the Fall 2011 semester. In order to qualify for the Dean's List, students must earn a grade point average of 3.4 or above, which is equivalent to a B+ or better.

3) Swampscott Athletics: There will be a registration meeting for the Swampscott/Marblehead Legion baseball teams on Sunday March 18, at 12 pm at the Swampscott football field house on Humphrey Street. Registration is for players ages 17 years old to 19 years old for the senior team, and 14 years old to 17 year olds for the junior team. This year Legion has gone to wood bats for both teams. Both teams will play approximately 20 games plus playoffs vs. some of the North Shores top Legion teams. Gino Cresta will be this year's juniors head coach and the senior head coach will be Tim Cassidy. Anyone needing information please contact Tim Cassidy at ctbone098@aol.com . New players will need an original raised seal birth certificate.

4) Weather Watch:  Patchy fog before 10 am. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 43, says the National Weather Service.

5) Tide Watch: Today's low tide at  is 11:50 am (-.20 ft). High tide is 6:12 pm (8.55 ft). The sun will rise at 6:54 am and set at 6:50 pm.
