Girls

  • To the side or back – Very long bangs are in — so long as they sweep to the side. And angled hair looks good, too, but leave open the possibility of pulling it back in a ponytail.
  • Tinting and feathers remain a trend – Rooster feathers remain a hit. They come in a variety of colors and get clamped to existing hair with beads. Speaking of color, girls and women like to tint their bangs a primary color.
  • Pop Culture — Teens have been emulating celebrities forever. Actress and singer Selena Gomes is one of those stars that today's kids look to for hair inspiration.

Boys

  • A bit longer — Back-to-school boys let their summer camp cuts grow out, Spinale said. Hockey players tend to let their hair grow. They like it to stick out from their helmets when hockey season arrives.
  • Pop Culture — Justin Bieber remains an influence.
  • Pro Culture — Tom Brady is such a hero in New England and around Swampscott. The way he wears his hair has a big influence on boys. The quarterback's training camp hair is a little long.
