Academy Awards 2013: Watch Oscars on TV and Swampscott Connections

Here's another Swampscott connection: Swampscott High graduate Bryan Buckley is up for an Oscar in the Best Live-Action Short Film category.

The Academy Awards are Sunday, Feb. 24 at the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center. The ceremonies will be televised live on ABC and in more than 225 foreign countries.

One of the nominees is Swampscott High graduate Bryan Buckley nominated for his 17-minute film Asad, about a child refugee from a war-torn fishing village in Somalia, according to Cinemasalem.com

Buckley is best known for his commercials, especially Super Bowl commercials, of which he has directed over 40.

He is following up Asad, his first narrative film, by directing his first feature film, “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus,” starring Reese Witherspoon, according to a Lynn Item article.

Walter Brennan, who lived in Swampscott, won three Oscars in the 1930s and 40s.

And the host of this year's Oscars is Seth MacFarlane, who drew on the seaside community in a couple ways for his movie Ted.

For one, the main character, John, played by Mark Wahlberg, was born in Swampscott, according to the movie plot.

And as many Swampscott people will remember — a major scene in the film was shot inside and outside a Swampscott home on Atlantic Avenue back in May of 2011.
