At least compared to the huge flag that sails at the avenue’s ocean end.

They sit more than stand at the ankles of a lilac tree dedicated to Swampscott’s Robert Jalbert who was aboard Flight 175 on Sept. 11, 2001.

The lilac tree itself is easy to miss, one of two lilac trees in a grove of lilac bushes.

The three flags were mostly still Sunday afternoon. They stirred when wind found a path close to the ground.

Whoever pushed them there made a simple gesture.

It came in a week that will see many gestures simple and grand as people reflect on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.
