5 Things You Need to Know Today: Feb. 10

Today is Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011. Here are five things for a Swampscott person to know.

1)  Tide Watch —  Ocean watchers and dog walkers take notice. Today's low tide is 9:57 a.m. (1.00 feet) and high tide is 4:11 p.m. (7.75 feet)

2) Christmas Tree Watch — This is the final week to have your Christmas tree hauled away. Collectors will haul it off on your regular trash pickup day.

3) Amnesty Watch — Amnesty days are running out. This week the library will clear overdue fines on Swampscott Public Library items. Just present your card at the main desk for the amnesty. If you have lost your card, the library will replace it free of charge this month.

4) Local History — 100 years ago on this date, Lincoln Day was observed in the town's schoolrooms. Older students listened to special readings. Younger students were told about "the great emancipator and martyred president." (Information from the Lynn Daily Evening Item.)

5) Today in Music History — In 1971, Carole King's "Tapestry" was released. (Information from www.on-this-day.com)
