5 Things to Know: Town to Assess Former Senior Center

1) Town and School Meeting Watch: 

The Swampscott School Committee invites the public to participate in 
an open forum "brainstorming" meeting on Wednesday, March 
13th, at 6pm at the Swampscott High School. This will be the first of 
what we expect to be several opportunities to share ideas about goals, 
priorities and ideas for continuing to improve the district and its 
programs during the upcoming period of transition to new leadership 
and on into the future. All are welcome, and we particularly encourage those with students in the system, or who may enroll students in the future, to attend.

2) Newsbit of the Day: The town's next step is a new assessment for the value of the 89 Burrill Street building that once housed the Swampscott Senior Center. Town Administrator Tom Younger told selectmen last week that the town received only one proposal in response to its request for proposals. And that proposal did not meet the RFP's criteria.

Twice earlier the town put the 89 Burrill St. building out to bid and it received no requests.

The town wants to find a buyer for the former senior center to get it back on the tax rolls.

The home has been empty for many years, and the town reached a transfer-of-ownership agreement with Leon E. Abbott Post 57 of the American Legion in 2011.

3) Swampscott Scholars: 

Devon Cassidy, high honors, was named to the Dean's List at the University of New Hampshire for the fall semester of the 2012-2013 academic year.
