5 Things to Know: Incumbent Selectmen Not Running for Re-Election

In sports, Swampscott High baseball coach TJ Baril has left Swampscott for another coaching job.

1) Town and School Meeting Watch: The Conservation Commission meets at 7:30 p.m. in the first-floor conference room at Town Hall.

2) Newsbit of the Day: Incumbent Selectmen Rich Malagrifa and David Van Dam are not running for re-election. Rich Malagrifa said his work schedule as an airline pilot and wanting to spend more time with his family were reasons why he was not running. David Van Dam said he is not seeking re-election because of time constraints as a result of his night meetings as chief of staff in Haverhill and his return to school. He will be taking classes at night for a master's degree in public administration.

3) Swampscott Scholars: Daiva N. Slotkus Miksyte, a resident of Swampscott, has been named to first honors on the Clark University Dean's List. This selection marks outstanding academic achievement during the fall 2012 semester.

To be eligible for first honors, students must have a grade point average of 3.8 or higher, of a maximum of 4.3 (all A+s).

4) Weather Watch: Mostly sunny, with a high near 46. Breezy, with a west wind 14 to 21 mph.

5) Big Blue Watch: Baseball coach TJ Baril has taken a baseball coaching job at Masconomet Regional this spring and will not return as Swampscott High's coach. Swampscott AD Jon Flanagan told the Lynn Item that he will start searching for a replacement for Baril.
