We asked five people what gift they would place under the Swampscott Christmas tree, Menorah or what have you — if they had the chance.

The only stipulation was that the gift would benefit the whole town or a large group of people.

5 Gifts For Swampscott

More open land. The only real open land the town has is above upper Jackson Field.

2. Swampscott High track team sprinter Lauren Moran:

A place for kids to hang out.

3. Finance Committee Chairman Michael McClung:

A fair share of Chapter 70 education funding from the state.

4. School Committee member Marianne Hartmann:

A very good town administrator. (The town is looking at candidates to fill the vacancy that arose when longtime Swampscott Administrator Andrew Maylor left on Dec. 15 to become North Andover's town manager.

5. Selectman David Van Dam:

A reduction in real estate taxes.

For those keeping score at home note that Mike McClung's wish is worth $700,000. That's real money and worth a phone call to the State House. In the meantime places like Wellesley don't have such a problem.
