Early Spring: Kell's Open

The owner of Popo's/Kell's Kreme on Humphrey Street opened several weeks early given the spring-like weather we've seen.

Not that winter ever took root but the ice cream and hot dog landmark on Humphrey Street was bursting with business on the first day of its season on Wednesday.

School kids walking by stopped in for scoops and cones.

Moms with kids stopped for ice cream and sprinkles. Some people call them jimmies, some call them sprills.

The servers behind the counter were in short sleeves and aqua shirts. The front door was open and a mild breeze blew.

You could smell the fresh salty air, feel the warm temperatures and taste the ice cream

Manager Krsytin Quinn, a student at North Shore Community College, said she was happy to be back to work.

The shop closed on Nov. 28, and it typically reopens later in March.

What with the mild winter and terrific winter the owner decided on Monday to open Wednesday.

So at noon on Wednesday the ice cream at Kell's started flowing.

A lot of people walking by were pleasantly surprised and drifted in the front door for an ice cream or frozen yogurt.

The spring hours are from noon until 9 p.m., seven days a week, Krystin said.
