Safe Schools Project Nears Completion

The project is located near Stanley School.

The construction project to make it safer for students to walk and bike to school is coming down to the wire.

Massachusetts Safe Routes to School Program's new sidewalks, bump-outs and crossings by Stanley School are all but completed with the start of school a mere six days away.

As of earlier this week all that remained for J. Marchese and Sons, the Everett construction company doing the work, was some landscaping, signage placement, street painting and the last of the asphalt spreading, said Swampscott DPW Director Gino Cresta.

A main element of the $300,000 federally funded MassDOT project is the bump-outs.

These features extend into the road in arcs from the curb, reducing the distance that walkers have to cross the street.

They have been installed at Orchard Road and Orchard Circle; at Whitman Road and Orchard Road; and Orchard Circle and Neighborhood Road, the DPW director said.

The project also includes new curbing and sidewalks.
