Whiz Kid: Zach Beermann

Swampscott teen is off to college now, but he has many fond memories of his time in school, playing sports and growing up in town.

Eighteen-year old Zach Beermann has a head and heart filled with great memories of his time spent in Swampscott.

Beermann, who’s now attending Boston University in the College of Arts and Sciences, spent this past summer as a park leader at the Stanley School.

“I played football, basketball and track at Swampscott High, and it was great to be a high school athlete here, I loved it,” Beermann said. “Going undefeated in spring track my sophomore year was awesome and winning the Thanksgiving Day game against Marblehead last year was great.”

Zach also said that beating Marblehead on the basketball court during his junior year was pretty special too. Beermann sank two free throws late in the game to ice the win over the Headers.

A couple of Beermann’s favorite classes at SHS were physics and psychology.

“Mister King was one of my favorite teachers, he was very hard, but I learned so much in his class last year in calculus,” Beermann said. “I also enjoyed Mr. Flanagan, and Miss Mackey was a great student advisor.”

Beerman went to Israel for six weeks during the summer between his sophomore and junior years and did community service there. Zach said the trip and the work he did there was “one of the best experiences of my life.”

Students from all over Massachusetts made the trip with Beermann, and he said he made some terrific friends and will always cherish his time spent abroad.

Beermann and his family live on Sumner Street, very close to the golf course. He has two brothers and a younger sister in the Middle School.

“I’m the oldest, sometimes it’s hard, but I have a great relationship with my mom and dad and my brothers and my sister,” Beermann said.

“I think I’ll miss my friends and the school spirit when I’m at BU,” Beermann said. “It was great when everybody got together to support the football team or the basketball team, I really enjoyed that about Swampscott.”

When Zach is in town he likes to play video games and hang with his friends, he also plays hoops at the JCC when he can.

“I am definitely going to try to make the BU basketball team as a walk-on candidate for sure,” Beermann said. “If that doesn’t work they have quite a few intramural leagues so I’ll be playing some basketball at school.”

“I’ll miss Swampscott, and I’m sure my mom and dad are a little nervous about me heading to school,” Beermann said. “Me, I’m excited about being in school and being my own person, I’m looking forward to new challenges.”
