Whiz Kid: Sydney Levine

Swampscott teenager Sydney Levine is focused on hitting her marks in gymnastics, doing well in school and heading off to Roger Williams after high school.

Fourteen year-old Sydney Levine is very focused on her athletics and her academics, with goals both short term and long term in mind.

The middle school eighth grader competes for the USA Gymnastics Team and has been to four state championships. Sydney finished in the top ten in the vault and the beam events, placing eighth out of over 300 gymnasts in both her events earlier this year.

“Those are my two favorite events, the vault and the beam,” Sydney said. “I started out doing dance when I was two, but I didn’t like it at all, so I switched to gymnastics.”

“It takes about six months to practice a routine and get ready,” Sydney said. “I like to perform while “Firework” by Katy Perry plays, just the music.”

Girls from all over the North Shore make up Sydney’s gymnastics team, Sydney has made it to Level 7.

Sydney played on the U-14 soccer team and recently started playing lacrosse. She lives on Manton Road with her parents Jill and Rob, and her younger brother Troy.

To keep limber for her gymnastics routines, Sydney has worked out a routine on her Rib Stick. She can cruise in her driveway while riding, dribble and shoot a basketball without missing a beat.

Sydney’s favorite classes at are math and science, with special attention to her math classes. Sydney wants to go to Roger Williams and become an architect or an engineer.

Sydney’s two favorite TV shows are Modern Family and Suburgatory.

“I also like to watch shows that help me learn about other people’s experiences, some reality shows to see what other people’s lives are like,” Sydney said.

The Levine family is members of Temple Emanu-El in Marblehead, Sydney was a Teen in Training this past summer at the JCC. The Levine family recently took a family trip to Europe, and Sydney spent time in Paris and Heidelberg, Germany, checking out the buildings and structures.

Another member of the Levine family is Brodie, the puppy dog that greeted Sydney on her thirteenth birthday.

“He makes my life complete, I just love him so much,” Sydney said. “I take him for a walk every day, we usually go to the beach.”

“I really want to keep up my grades and go to Roger Williams to become an architect or an engineer,” Sydney said. “I’m a creative person and I love math and I love to design.”

“Science really interests me too, I got high advanced scores on MCAS, I enjoy learning,” Sydney said.
