Whiz Kid: Spencer Perkins

Swampscott 11-year old has fun on the field and learns the value of helping others through the Cradles to Crayons Program.

The Cradles to Crayons Program was started in 2002 to get new and gently used children’s goods out to the kids that need them the most, in the Greater Boston area and all over the country.

On Memorial Day, 11-year-old Spencer Perkins and his classmates from the Tower School went to Quincy to clean and sort goods that would be given to needy children in the area.

“We cleaned up shoes, and some toys, clothes, blankets and some sporting equipment,” Perkins said.  “What we worked on will be given away to people who need it.”

Perkins lives on Beach Bluff Avenue, with his younger brother Quinn, his dad Ken and his mom, Laura. Spencer will be entering the sixth grade at Tower School in the fall.

“My favorite class is art class, because I really like to sculpt and work on my art projects,” Perkins said.  “I love to read, and my favorite book is “The Big Field,” by Mike Lupica.”

Perkins plays midfielder in the youth soccer program in town and also plays little league baseball. Spencer pitches and plays second base, and last month he threw a no-hitter on the mound, allowing only three base runners the entire game, pitching a complete game shutout.

Spencer has lived in Swampscott his entre life, and enjoys playing floor hockey when he’s not playing baseball and soccer.
