Whiz Kid: Sarah Hingston

Swampscott teen helps her softball team to a title and volunteers each fall for the Miles For Kyle fundraiser.

Swampscott teen Sarah Hingston is always moving. Playing softball, soccer and footsall, and volunteering to help her cousin fight his seizures.

What’s footsall? It’s indoor soccer; she plays in Danvers, and has been on the team for the past three years. Hingston lives on MacArthur Circle with her mom and dad, her older brother Ryan and her twin brother Danny.

Hingston will turn 14 on August 20, and is heading into the eighth grade at the Swampscott Middle School.

“My favorite class was Social Studies last year with Mrs. Mackenzie,” Hingston said from her home this week. “She always makes learning fun.”

Hingston is a member of the St. Pius Church in Lynn, loves to hang with her friends, and listens to “all types” of music when she’s not playing sports.

After receiving a bye in the first round of the softball playoffs, Hingston hit her first career grand-slam in a win over arch-rivals Marblehead, setting up the championship game between Hingston’s Hurricanes and the Nor’easters.

The two Senior Softball League entries are made up of girls 13, 14 and 15 years old.

The Hurricanes prevailed, 11-10 over the Nor’easters to take the title.

“There’s no softball this summer. So I’ll probably be going to soccer or some softball camps,” Hingston said.

Sarah played soccer last season on the U-14 Bomb Squad here in town, and played indoor soccer with the S.F. Vikings out of Hamilton.

Sarah’s cousin Kyle Butt, also from Swampscott, has suffered from epileptic seizures since childhood, and needed to go to Cleveland for surgery. Money has been raised to help Kyle and his family with the “Miles For Kyle” 5K run and 1K walk every October that starts at Preston Beach and winds around Marblehead and Swampscott.

“I’m really glad I can help Kyle,” Sarah said.
