Whiz Kid: Colin Frary

If there's a youth game in town that uses a ball, chances are that Colin Frary is in that game, ready for action.

If the game uses a ball, and kids are playing for a youth team from Swampscott, there’s a good chance that 11-year-old Colin Frary is participating.

Frary plays youth baseball, basketball and football in town and just finished up a good season on the 6th grade football team, playing some quarterback, fullback, and different positions on the defensive side of the ball.

“I think football is my favorite sport because of the hitting, the contact, the physical play,” Frary said. “There’s a lot of bumping in basketball, but it’s different on the football field, I really enjoy making a good tackle.”

Frary played QB against Stoneham and Peabody and ran for a touchdown against Charlestown last month.

“We didn’t have a great season, record-wise but it was a lot of fun,” Colin said. “The coaches really helped us and I think we got better later in the season from when we started at the beginning of the season.”

Frary is in the sixth grade at the Swampscott Middle School, and recently went with many of his classmates to Maine on the Ferry Beach ecology trip.

“The weather wasn’t too great when we were there, I enjoyed being away with my friends and we learned a lot,” Colin said.

Frary is getting ready for the 2011-2012 Swampscott-Nahant Youth Basketball League season, where he’ll be suiting up as a power–forward and some times manning the point guard position.

Colin is the son of David Frary and Lisa Kesselman, and he lives on Morton Road with his older brother Cam Frary, a sophomore on the Big Blue football team, and his younger brother Dylan Kesselman, who’s in the third grade at Stanley School.

“I love living in Swampscott, the people here are very nice,” Frary said. “I like to hang out with my friends and toss the ball around when I don’t have a game or a practice, or play video games sometimes.”

“It’s fun to hang out in Swampscott, I like the beach and my favorite food is a roast beef sandwich.”

Frary plays for the major league Blue Jays during the baseball season, and hit his first dinger during the 2011 campaign, spending his time on the pitcher’s mound at first base and in centerfield.

“I made the 11-year-old All-Stars and we had an awesome team, we won the District 16 championship, Mr. Perkins, Mr. Santanello and Mr. Marshall were great coaches and we had an awesome time,” Frary said.

Frary’s favorite class is English at Swampscott Middle School, and he’ll turn 12 next March.

“Being an All-Star last summer was one of the best things that’s ever happened to me, it went by so fast, I hope I can make it as a 12-year-old and try to win more games in the playoffs,” Colin said.

When Colin’s not practicing or taking care of his English homework, he enjoys watching movies on TV, especially comedies and horror movies, his favorite recent movie is Paranormal Activity 3.
