Whatcha Catch?

How many Swampscott teens does it take to reel in a 13 inch flounder? The Patch investigative journalism team finds out on a recent visit to the pier on Fisherman's Beach.

The best place to jump, and the best place to fish in town is the pier at , and on a recent summer afternoon, several young Swampscott anglers were out trying to reel in the elusive flounder.

Under the watchful eyes of a couple of old salts, Jeremy Armano, Neil Petrocelli, Jake Venuti, Chris Myette, Alden Freddo and Owen Madigan-Fried were on the pier looking to reap some of the ocean’s bounty.

“It’s cool to be out here, we fish and we go for a swim,” Madigan-Fried said.

In addition to the six Swampscott kids, there were a couple of older fishermen on hand providing tips to the younger crowd.

“I’m out here a lot, when the tide starts to go out, the flounder start to move and we usually do pretty well,” Bob said. “Just get that sea worm on the hook and out it out there and it doesn’t take too long.”

“They’ve gotta be 12 inches long, or you have to throw ‘em back,” Bob said. “I pull in a dozen or so on a good day.”

“It happened really fast,” Jeremy Armano said. “I felt the tug on the line, and just gave it a pull and I got it on the pier, it took less than a minute.”

Any plans for the catch of the day?

“Don’t know,” Armano said. “Fish sandwiches I guess.”
