VIDEOS: Wait a Minute And it Will Change, Hopefully

Locals out and about under a gray sky and a few raindrops were hopeful the sun will break through soon, warming things up and drying out the puddles.

The numbers were drastically down, but people were still out walking along Humphrey Street and along King’s Beach Wednesday afternoon.

The weather, for lack of a better word, has been lousy around Swampscott for several days, and it’s beginning to wear on people wondering when spring is going to show up.

“It’s tough, it gets depressing after a while,” Joanne, who was walking her dog Alfred, said. “I know we need some rain, but day after day is a little bit too much, I’d like it a little warmer around here too.”

High School sports were washed out again Wednesday afternoon, freshman, junior varsity and varsity softball just some of the casualties. The rain held off a bit during the day Wednesday, but the fields have not had a chance to dry out since the sun is AWOL from the area.

“We’re postponed today, hopefully we can get some games in soon,” Frank Kowalski said. Kowalski is the head coach of the varsity softball team that was scheduled to host Saugus under the lights on Forest Avenue Wednesday night.

Little League coaches were hard at work with Quick-Dry, rakes and shovels, trying to get the little league field ready for a 5:30 game tonight, pitting the Indians against the Yankees in the first game of a doubleheader. The Nahant Red Sox were on tap for a 7:30 game against the Athletics in the second game of the evening, but everyone will be staying home tonight.

“It’s been a bad spring altogether,” Bill from Burpee Road said in front of the Red Rock. “I know it’s going to be 90 degrees soon, but I’d really like to put my sunglasses on one of these days.”

“Business hasn’t been too bad,” Stacy from the Red Rock said. “People still want ice cream and Lime Rickeys even though it’s been kind of cool this week.”

As legendary weatherman Don Kent used to say, summer will get here, it’s just not here yet.
