VIDEO: Recreation Commission Ready For Spring And Summer

From sailing to science, the Swampscott Recreation Commission is gearing up their programs for the coming months.

Recreation Director was hard at work Thursday morning in her office at the Town Hall.

She was going through applications for seasonal employment with the Recreation Commission.

“We’ve had many, many qualified candidates submit applications for positions this year,” Strauss said. “I’m confident we’ll have great people working with us this year.”

In addition to applications, Strauss and the Recreation Commission are preparing for Saturday’s “Swampscott’s Got Talent.”

The talent showcase is from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the high school.  Tickets are $5 for admission to Swampscott’s first all-ages talent showcase.

“Twenty four acts have signed up, including singers, dancers, piano players and a 12-year-old who is quite proficient with the yo-yo.”

Artwork by students from all the schools in town will also be on display Saturday.

“We’ve got quite a few programs coming up, there’s no deadline to register, but many of them fill up fast, so it’s good to sign up quickly,” Strauss said.

is coming up during school vacation week, there are also youth and adult sailing programs, Art Camp, jewelry classes and playground programs.

If you love science, later this year Swampscott will host a Wicked Cool Rocket Science Program and a Wicked Cool Wacky Lab Week.

“We’ve streamlined our sailing program, and we’ll be offering evening sailing from the Swampscott Yacht Club,” Strauss said. “We had a generous donation of a Rhodes sailboat to the town sailing program that we’ll be using this year.”

“The spaces are filling up fast for our programs,” Strauss said. “Residents should go to the Recreation Commission’s website, www.swampscottrec.com for program details and sign-up information.”

The Recreation Commission will also offer tennis and track and field programs this summer.

Events will include a carnival June 16-19 at Phillips Park, a Fourth of July Parade on June 26, and the Swampscott Arts and Crafts Festival Sept. 10-11 at Linscott Park.
