VIDEO: Chris Thomsen is the Man in the Broadcast Booth

Swampscott High School freshman Chris Thomsen is the voice of Big Blue lacrosse, basketball and football.

Swampscott High School freshman Chris Thomsen is the man behind the microphone for many Big Blue sports.  The 15 year-old is the voice of Big Blue lacrosse, football and basketball.

“Basketball is my favorite sport,” Thomsen said. “I got interested in sports because of my dad, I saw what he did and I wanted to do it too.”

Thomsen’s dad Ian covers basketball for Sports Illustrated after a gig with the Boston Globe and a stint in Europe.

“When I saw my dad reporting on basketball, it really grabbed me,” Chris said. “I wanted to report on sports and get a job in the media.”

In addition to his work covering the lacrosse team this spring, Chris is working a camera at the Swampscott High School production of Damn Yankees. Chris is stationed to the left of the stage, working camera number three.

Chris has even started his own broadcast company, called Three Point Productions, with brothers Ben and Alex Cormier.

Ben is an eighth grader and works the camera at events, while seventh grader Alex Cormier is the color man with Thomsen calling the play by play.

The group covers a lot of football: the freshman football team; the senior girls’ Powder Puff football game against Marblehead; and several Pop Warner games during the fall.

When he’s not calling the action, Chris gets into the action as a small forward on the basketball court, and an infielder in baseball. This spring was tough, because he broke his wrist skiing and had to sit out the baseball season.

Chris’s favorite class in school is English with Mr. Moulison, “It’s hard but it’s a lot of fun.”

Thomsen plays the piano and his favorite broadcasters are the Red Sox TV team of Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy.

Chris's older sister Jackie, a 16-year-old sophomore at SHS, is performing in the Drama Club's production of Damn Yankees.

“One of the things I really like about Swampscott High is the Video Club,” Thomsen said. “I have a great time doing games, and it’s something I’m passionate about.”
