The Swampscott Yacht Club will host its annual open house on June 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Swampscott Fish House and the public is invited.
The club was formed in 1933 for the purpose of promoting yachting and sailboat racing in Nahant Bay but has grown as both a social club and to promote all sorts of water sports and activities.
“We have the best possible location as our home is the historic Swampscott Fish House at one of the oldest - if not the oldest public beach - in America,” says Swampscott Yacht Club Commodore Stephen Speranza. “This is one of the best bargains around – unparalleled views, friendly members and a fun roster of activities.”
This year the open house will include entertainment by Larry and the Blues Casters band, as well as refreshments and a barbecue. For those who explore the club, there is an opportunity to experience a free ride on one of the two Swampscott Yacht Club launch boats operating in Swampscott Harbor. As a special offer, those who join the club on the day of the Open House, the initiation fee is $150 or half-price.
Informational tables will also be set up and staffed by representatives of the Swampscott Harbormaster, Swampscott Recreation Commission which hosts the town sailing program, Ocean House Paddle Board and Café, Eastern Mountain Sports and Sudbury Boat Care.
The Swampscott Yacht Club is housed at the Fish House, which was built in 1896, is on the National Historic Register of Historic Places and is the only municipal fish house on the East Coast. The SYC also hosts a free public community lecture series Fish Tales from the Fish House, which was conceived of, in part, to share the richness of community life and the history of coastal Swampscott, as well as introduce community members to the treasured Fish House. The Swampscott Yacht Club is a volunteer club founded in 1933 for the purpose of promoting yachting and sailboat racing. Located on the second floor of the Fish House, there are about 200 members, roughly half of whom are boaters, enjoying fishing, sailing, power boating, kayaking or rowing. Membership costs as little as $340 per year.
