Swampscott Scouts to Lead the Way on Camping Trips

Several Swampscott Boy Scouts recently took a course in camping, hiking, nature study, pioneering, and cooking. The course mirrors the first Scout camp conducted by the founder of the Scouting Movement.

Chris James, Connor Lau, Luke O'Brien and John Rizk from Troop 53 recently completed the Brownsea 22 Leadership Training Program at Wah-Tut-Ca Scout Reservation in Northwood, New Hampshire.

The one-week course closely parallels the first Scout camp conducted by the founder of the Scouting Movement, Lord Baden Powell, in 1907 and is for senior scouts.

Brownsea teaches youth leadership skills through the actual practice and use of Scout skills concentrated on camping, hiking, nature study, pioneering, and cooking.

James, Lau, O'Brien and Rizk will use these skills to help lead Troop 53 on its upcoming trips; summer camp at  Wah-tut-Ca in July and camping at Gettysburg / Hershey Park in August.

The Boy Scouts serve boys between the ages of 11 and 17 with interests in all-weather camping, hiking, fishing, rock climbing, canoeing, whitewater rafting, community service, etc. while teaching the program's tenets of character, citizenship and personal fitness.
