 Ask a Personal Trainer

We’re starting a new monthly feature called Ask a Personal Trainer, where our star personal trainers answer YOUR fitness questions!  Please send your questions to JCC General Manager Lori Laviolette at llaviolette@jccns.com and we’ll get them answered!  Here’s our first installment, featuring JCC Personal Trainer Alison Maldonis.

Question: “I’m a 48-year old woman in good health. I’ve been working out for six months, taking classes three times a week. I walk about five days a week, but I don’t seem to be losing any weight. I had hoped to see results by now.  What should I do differently?”

Trainer Alison Maldonis: Thank you for your question and great job keeping on a regular exercise routine! Overall wellness requires exercise and proper nutrition. So try eliminating as many processed foods as possible and focus your diet on lean protein (chicken, fish, eggs, yogurt), complex carbohydrates from whole grains, vegetables and fruits.  As far as exercise, keep taking advantage of the fantastic classes offered here at the JCC. I’d also recommend Strength Training 2-3 days a week, as this component is great for overall fitness and especially for maintaining bone density as we get older. Keep walking, too, and try intervals. For example:  Walk at a regular pace for two minutes, followed by two minutes of very brisk walking. Try to walk for about 40-45 minutes a day. If you’re diligent with the training program, you should see results soon!  Good luck!
