Might The Blue Line Extend Closer to Swampscott?

Transportation officials heard testimony from those who support extending the Blue Line to Lynn.

The Blue Line’s end is now Wonderland in Revere.

If speakers at Wednesday's transportation forum at Lynn City Hall have their way, the subway line would stretch to Lynn.

Swampscott Town Administrator Tom Younger was among the audience at “MassDOT: Your Vision, Our Future,” a two-hour fourum where residents told state transportation officials their thoughts about public transportation.

Younger said the Blue Line topic got most of the attention.

Swampscott has an interest in seeing the line edge closer to town.

For those who drive to Revere then park and board a subway for Boston, they could now hop on a bus to Lynn, or park in Lynn, to travel to Boston or Logan Airport.

The line's extension to Lynn could also bring more people to Swampscott for the beaches or shopping. Again, Swampscott would only be a bus ride or a cab fare away for those traveling to Lynn from points south.

While Swampscott does have a commuter rail, the rail's schedule might not always meet the travelers' needs, the town administrator said.

If the line is extended to Lynn, some would like to see it go to the parking garage across from North Shore Community College.

There was no indication at the forum on whether the line extension would happen. The Department of Transportation merely accepted comments from the public.

Other topics included public transportation schedules and fares.

The Swampscott town administrator was accompanied at the forum by Selectman Barry Greenfield.
