Commuters Beware: Callahan Tunnell Closed

Commuters who use the Callahan Tunnell will need to seek an alternative.

MassDOT’s Callahan Tunnel Project begins with a full tunnel closure for rehabilitation on December 27, 2013 through March 12, 2014.

The 50-year-old tunnel's deck and curbing and wallpanels are deteriorating and will be redone over the next year. The project will be completed in three phases.

 Vehicles heading to points south via I-93 Southbound may want to avoid traffic detoured onto Albany Street. MassDOT has opened up access to an express route to I-93 to all vehicles, regardless of occupancy.

 MassDOT has made improvements to signal timing along detour routes as-needed to facilitate the flow of traffic during construction. Key intersections will be monitored during the tunnel closure by traffic engineers and police. The web page also includes trip planning tools during the duration of the closure and a one-page Printable Fact Sheet also translated into Chinese, Portuguese and Spanish. 

The proposed work schedule includes the full tunnel closure in early 2014 followed by an additional 4-5 months of work requiring overnight closures between 11p.m. and 5a.m. The complete closure of the tunnel will reduce the overall duration of the project, provide enhanced public safety by minimizing changes to traffic flow, and better coordinate with other local projects including Tobin Bridge work, which is scheduled to resume in spring 2014.
