5 Tips To Weather Irene

This week's Patch Picks are hurricane tips from the Swampscott Fire Department.

In the weekly  we highlight everything from beaches to books. This week Swampscott fire Deputy Chief James Potts gives us 5 tips to prepare for a hurricane.

We asked for 5, so this is not an exhaustive live.

  • Water – Each household should have a gallon of water per person per day. If the storm threatens Swampscott, at least a two-day supply of water is advisable, the deputy chief said.
  • Food in cans– Have a reserve supply of nonperishbale food items and a manual can opener.
  • Pet supplies — Have pet food, a leash and a crate on hand.
  • Meds — Have prescriptions filled. At the very least, have enough medication to last several days.
  • Light — Have flashlights, lanterns and batteries. Do not use a kerosene lantern inside the house.
