Swampscott Scouts In Space

The boys of Swampscott Cub Scout Pack 55 took steps to become rocket scientists on Saturday October 5. Assembling early in the morning at Abbott Park near the Clarke Elementary School, the boys, who are all between the ages of 7 and 10, launched the rockets which they had built at a recent Pack meeting.

While each rocket was the individual project of the Cub Scout himself, the boys had to work with each other in terms of  planning and coordination with materials and tools. Some of the boys were  focused on ensuring the space ships would be as aerodynamic as possible while other boys decided that their rockets needed to be colorfully decorated. No matter the design, each Cub Scout worked diligently to craft the best rocket possible.

In order to ensure the safety of all, the leadership team of Pack 55 was busy working with each of the Cub Scouts. Cubmaster Jeffrey A. Katz and Assistant Cubmaster Steve Hutcheon were responsible for parachute trimming and packing, while longtime Scout leader Chris Lau and Den Chief  Harry Katz handled the engine assembly. Den Leader Joe Maldanado and his son Webelo Matthew Maldanado oversaw the safe recovery of the rockets while the actual launch pad operations were expertly executed by Den Leaders Maura Lau and Mark Shilo along with former Cubmaster Jessie Davis.
