Marblehead and Swampscott Bishop Fenwick High School Students Awarded Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards
Bishop Fenwick High School is pleased to announce the winners of the 2014 Boston Globe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Awards are for the compilation of a portfolio or for individual pieces. Bishop Fenwick students from 9th through 12th grade won a total of 35 awards, including 2 students from Marblehead and Swampscott.
Swampscott resident Nina Groom was awarded a Silver Key for her Sculpture “Robot Mermaid” and a Silver Key for Digital Art for her piece“Angler Fish.” Marblehead resident Will Vigneron was awarded an Honorable Mention for his photograph, “Crashing Waves”taken at Castle Rock. Both seniors at Bishop Fenwick, Groom is also involved in the drama program at the school and is Captain of the girl’s hockey team, and Vigneron is captain of the golf and baseball teams as well as a member of the basketball team.
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards has an impressive legacy dating back to 1923. Over the years, the awards have grown to become the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for creative young artists and writers. A noteworthy roster of past winners includes Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, John Updike and many more.

Each year, students can apply in 28 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published. Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients. Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
The Scholastic Art and Writing Award Ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2014. Ceremonies for all Honorable Mention, Silver and Gold Key award recipients will be held at the Blackman Auditorium on the campus of Northeastern University in Boston.
