What to Do About an Interim Super?

Elections are so close, so what makes sense? My opinion...

Recently posted on the Patch were comments and concerns relating to the Superintendent search.  Specifically, the question was raised as to whether or not the Committee should wait until after the election.  A friend called to ask my opinion, so I felt a public statement would be beneficial.

I feel strongly that the committee should move forward in finding an Interim Superintendent.  We simply don’t have the luxury of time on our side.  The poor timing of the shift in Superintendent’s role coinciding with the departure of the High School Principal has created a power vacuum.  This is a hole that the School Committee must fill, and without hesitation.

I have confidence that the hiring committee is diverse and qualified:  two moderate school committee members, our four principals, two teachers, the school business manager, school IT Director and the Town Administrator.

This is an issue that shouldn’t wait for the elections.  Any change to the School Committee – and I am certainly hopeful that there will be two new team members – would hopefully be seen as yet another step towards ironing out the current chaos.
