Seinfeld/Modern Family/Saturday Night Live Comedian/Writer Will Share Jewish Journey of Self-Discovery

The Women’s Division of Jewish Federation of the North Shore (JFNS) and Combined Jewish Philanthropy’s Pomegranate Society invite North Shore women to “Comedy and Cocktails,” a Women’s Philanthropy event featuring Carol Leifer, comedian and writer for Seinfeld, Modern Family and Saturday Night Live, to be held on Thursday, April 4, at The Westin Waltham Boston hotel. Local Co-Chairs are the mother-daughter team Helaine R. Hazlett and Karen Rosenberg.

More than 400 women are expected at the event, during which Leifer will share the story of her life as a comedian, producer and writer, and her Jewish journey of self-discovery. Leifer also will sell autographed copies of her book, When You Lie About Your Age, the Terrorists Win.

“Comedy and Cocktails” is open to all women who pledge a minimum of $500 to the 2013 JFNS Community Campaign, which supports programs that sustain Jewish identity and enrich Jewish community on the North Shore, in Israel and around the world.

The Pomegranate Society, a program of CJP’s Women’s Philanthropy division, recognizes women who give $1,800 or more annually to CJP.

Rosenberg noted that the event represents an important milestone for local Jewish women: it is the first official gathering of the combined North Shore and Greater Boston Federations’ women’s philanthropy divisions. Combined Jewish Philanthropy (CJP) and JFNS recently announced plans to merge in June.

“’Comedy and Cocktails’ promises to be not only an evening full of laughs, but also an opportunity to gather together under one roof and for one cause,” she said. “We look forward to getting to know the women of CJP and we’re excited to introduce them to all that we do north of the city.”

Hazlett said that the event has additional significance. “The joint gathering will take the place of JFNS’s annual ‘Women of Valor’ event,” she explained, “This year we will celebrate the pending merger of JFNS and CJP into an organization that will serve the needs of the entire Greater Boston Jewish community. We invite all grandmothers, mothers, daughters, in-laws, sisters, aunts and their friends to join us.”

Shari McGuirk and Phyllis Eidelman, North Shore residents, have participated in a video to be premiered during the event. The evening will include cocktails and hors d’oeuvres followed by a light dinner.  Dietary laws will be observed. The cost for the event is $65 per person.
