Grants Available for Jewish Camping

"One Happy Camper" Supports First-Time Jewish Overnight Camping Experiences Regardless of Family's Financial Need

Jewish overnight camp is more than just a fun summer experience—it’s where values are learned and lived; where children make important friendships and build a community like no other. Now, North Shore families are eligible for grants of $1,000 for first-time campers attending a variety of Jewish summer camps through “One Happy Camper,” a program of The Foundation for Jewish Camp and Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP).

To qualify for a grant, a child must: attend Jewish overnight summer camp as a first-time camper in the summer of 2013 for a minimum of three weeks; belong to a participating synagogue and/or live in the Greater Boston area; and must not be enrolled as a student in a Jewish day school. Families may apply for more than one grant. Financial need is not a criterion.

“Jewish overnight camping is a powerful experience,” remarks Kimberlee Schumacher, Interim Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of the North Shore (JFNS). “Studies have shown that children who attend camp are more likely to be connected to Jewish life and to Israel.

“We are so pleased that the ‘One Happy Camper’ program is available to families in our area. This is one of many opportunities significantly benefiting our North Shore community as a result of our partnership with CJP.” JFNS is scheduled to merge with CJP this year.

There is no formal deadline for application, but interested families are encouraged to apply promptly as funds are limited. For a full list of eligible camps and the online grant application, please visit http://www.cjp.org/One-Happy-Camper-Grant.aspx.
