Off The Shelf

Junior Volunteers at the Library

“Off the Shelf”

Books have been flying off of the shelf all summer long at the Swampscott Public Library. Adults have been coming  in looking for great “beach” reads, travel
books, and barbecue cookbooks. Younger borrowers flock into the building
picking up their books for summer reading. Most schoolchildren have required
summer reading and we try to answer the needs of all of younger patrons. As
well as the books “flying off the shelves: they also have to be returned to the
shelves and we are seeking some help in keeping up with the fast pace of books
being returned. The Children’s librarians are once again organizing a group of
“Junior Volunteers”’. These students, grade 7 and up, can come to the library
for one hour and a half to help shelve in the Children’s room. This volunteer
time can fulfill requirements for community service in school, fulfill
requirements for religious education programs and become part of a resume of
extracurricular activities. Any student interested in becoming g a “Junior
Volunteer” should speak with either Beth or Izzi in the Children’s department.
They can be reached at 781-596-8867 ext. 307.
