"Off the Shelf"

Review for the week

“Off the Shelf”- May 9, 2012

Swampscott Public Library circulates a great many DVD’s as well as books. A popular genre of DVD is the murder mysteries.  There are quite a few series of murder mysteries that are always flying off the shelf at the library. One such series is “Midsomer Murders”. These mysteries are all set in tiny villages in England.  Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby and Detective Ben Jones set out to solve the murders in each story. They were originally shown on British television and then transported to American TV.

Another such series is “The Murdoch Mysteries”. The series takes place in Toronto in the 1890s, following Detective William Murdoch of the Toronto Constabulary who solves many of his cases using methods of detection that were unusual at that time. These methods include fingerprinting, human-blood testing, surveillance
and trace evidence. Detective Murdoch is assisted by the three other main
characters: Inspector Brackenreid, Doctor Julia Ogden, and his inexperienced
but eager partner Constable George Crabtree.

“Touching Evil” is a series which follow Detective Dave Creegan who is a member of the Organized and Serial Crime unite in Britain. Creegan is the type of detective
who likes to follow his own instincts when trying to solve a case. This is a
PBS mystery series.

“Trial and Retribution," a  Law & Order-like British series, follows cases from the commission of the crime to the trial of the accused. This series is no longer in production but patrons ofthe library enjoy watching these older cases.
