Five Things for Tuesday, Nov. 5
- Tuesday's forecast calls for mostly sunshine with a high temperature of 49 degrees.
- On Wednesday, at 7 p.m., Selectmen will meet at Town Hall. The agenda includes the Fiscal 2014 financial forecast, the Beautification Committee's Traffic Island Awards and discussion of a state law that requires gun owners to keep guns locked in a safe.
The Swampscott Police Department would like to announce that it is now accepting applications for the Town’s Winter Parking Ban. The Winter Parking Ban requires that motor vehicles must be off of the roadways between the hours of 1 A.M. and 6 A.M. from December 1, 2013 (the evening of November 30th) through 6 A.M. March 30, 2014. The only vehicles that may be left on the road during these hours are vehicles with valid Winter Parking stickers. Vehicles found to be in violation will be issued parking violations based upon the following conditions:
- The absence of a parking waiver sticker ($20.00)
- Vehicle parked on the street despite forecasted snowfall, regardless of being issued a sticker ($25.00).
- Vehicle parked on the street during a snow emergency and/or impeding snow removal ($50.00).
- On Thursday, Bideew Bou Bess, a popular hip-hop band from Senegal, and American percussionist Tony Vacca will perform a free concert on November 7 at 6:30 pm at the Swampscott High School auditorium. Stanley Elementary School students will play drumming rhythms learned during workshops with Vacca and the group.
Bideew Bou Bess blends hip-hop with traditional West African melodies. The three brothers incorporate lyrics describing their vision for 21st century Africa.
The Stanley School PTO funded the concert and workshops.
- On Thursday Nov. 7, at 7 pm the Swampscott Public Library will present a program on digital safety. This presentation covers topics including: the way college admissions officers and employers use information from Facebook or Google to assess applicants; risks associated with location “metadata” contained in pictures uploaded to Facebook; the legal troubles that kids can face from online pranks (or intentionally hurtful behavior); consequences of cyberbullying, sexting/sextortion dangers; and more. This program, designed for all ages, will be presented by the Merrimack Analysis Group.
