Selectmen Propose Stashing Cell Phones

Five noteworthies from Swampscott.

1. Selectmen Notes:  

Selectmen completed the first reading of a proposal to refrain from using cell phones and other electronic devices during their meetings. Selectman Matt Strauss said the board needs to focus on the agenda and the residents. The proposal will need another reading. 

2. Weather Watch: 

Friday's forecast calls for showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 10 am, then a chance of showers. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Patchy fog before 9 am with a high temperature of 72.

Looking ahead to Oct. 13, the MDA Witch Ride will pass through Swampscott Thousands of motorcycles are scheduled to pass through town about 1:30 p.m., a Witch Ride representative told selectmen Wednesday.

The town will post an annoucment ahead of time to remind peope of the event and to expect a traffic delay.


The ride is in its 25th year and over the years has raised more than a half million dollars for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Eighteen familes are affected by MDA in Swampscott, according to an MDA representative.

The ride starts at Boston Harley-Davidson in Everett and ends at Shetland Park in Salem. 

The rain date is Oct. 20.
