Markey or Gomez: Who Would You Vote for Today?

There is a lot of campaigning to do before the Democrat and Republican face off on June 25 in the U.S. Senate special election.

After months of campaigning we now know who is going head-to-head in the June 25 special U.S. Senate election. Democratic Congressman Edward Markey (D-Malden) took the Democratic vote in the Tuesday election over fellow Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston). Political newcomer and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset came out on top of a field of Republican candidates  - including more seasoned opponents former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan and State Rep. Dan Winslow of Norfolk. With a month-and-a-half of campaigning still to come, we wanted to stop and ask: if the special election was held today - who would you vote for right now? Markey or Gomez? Tell us in our comments section below.

Updated: Challengers Sweep the Field in Local Elections

The School Committee has two new members, Amy O'Connor and Carin Marshall.

Two challengers won School Committee seats in local elections Tuesday. And the selectmen's race had no incumbents, so the two winners are new faces.  But one of this year's winners in the selectmen's race was an incumbent who lost last year — Matt Strauss. This time around he was the leading vote getter among all candidates in contested races, tallying 1,676 votes. The difference? He worked the campaign trail, knocking on doors — about 600 of them — and talking with residents, said Strauss. He was in high spirits at Town Hall.  "(2012) I didn't work hard enough," he said. He learned his lesson and now he looks forward to working with selectmen and the town administrator and for residents, he said. Strauss will be joined by John Callahan, …

Why the High Turnout in Swampscott?

The town clerk offered a few reasons for Tuesday's turnout.

A 28 percent voter turnout in Tuesday's elections was a good number. By comparison, the turnout for local elections in 2012 was 21 percent and 18 percent in 2011. Town Clerk Susan Duplin and Assistant Town Clerk Connie Hayes attributed this year's increased activity to dual elections — voters cast special primary and local election ballots — the fine sunny day and contested local races. The 28 percent figure was right in line with the town clerk's prediction, too. A day before the election she said that, if she had to guess the turnout, she would put it at 25 to 30 percent. For the complete unofficial results, check out election wrap-up story.

Gomez to Face Markey in Senate Election

The former Navy SEAL and the longtime Congressman will face off June 25 to fill John Kerry's former U.S. Senate seat.

A political newcomer will face a long-time Massachusetts politician in the race to be the Bay State's next U.S. senator. The Associated Press has declared Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset and Democratic U.S. Congressman Edward Markey of Malden the winners of their U.S. Senate special primary elections, according to tweets from Fox 25. The call for Gomez came approximately one hour after the polls closed in the statewide primary while a call for Markey came moments later. Gomez defeats his more seasoned opponents, former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan of Abington and state Rep. Dan Winslow of Norfolk. Markey beat fellow U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch of South Boston. Brett Rhyne of Needham ran an …

Swampscott Live: Turnout Surprises at Precincts 3&4

Patch will update this article throughout the day and post results of contested races as soon as they are announced.

8:56 p.m.: Here are your unofficial results for Board of Selectmen and School Committee. 1:30 p.m.: At about 1:30 p.m., the voter turnout at Precincts 3 and 4 at First Church Swampscott, Congregational, was surprisingly high, said Prec. 4 Warden Theresa Grasso. Four hundred and ninety-five people had cast ballots already at Prec. 4, and 316 at Prec. 3. Clerk Kay Grasso said, by comparison, Prec. 4 had only 138 votes cast in the entire local election n 2009. She thought the combined US Senate primary/local election may have accounted for the good showing. Outside, Michael Patriarca of Swampscott said the senate primary, and a vote for Edward Markey — as well as the School Committee race — brought him out, though he usually votes in local …
