Grown Ups 2 movie representatives are talking to Swampscott about shooting an additional 13 days in town in the wake of the movie producer's announcement about scrapping plans to film at Christopher Piper Field in Marblehead.
Swampscott and movie representatives are talking about Swampscott's Phillips Park as the setting for additional scenes in the movie Grown Ups 2, according to town officials. That would be an additional 13 days of filming; on top of the 15-19 days of shooting already announced for Swampscott. Assistant Town Administrator Dave Castellarin says details have to be ironed out in an agreement that would bring a Hollywood set to the practice football field and nearby parking lot at Phillips Park. Movie producers want to start building the set as soon as possible but realistically the soonest any set construction could start would be is Wednesday, he said. Swampscott's town administrator, Thomas Younger, said no deal has been inked. "No decision…

The owner of the proposed restaurant must return to the ZBA with new drawings to gain approvals.
At their meeting on Wednesday the Zoning Board of Appeals sent a proposed Vietnamese restaurant at 286 Humphrey Street back to the drawing board. The applicants, Nam Nguyen and Tho Thi Lam-Nguyen, want a permit to renovate the building, formerly occupied by an insurance company and law firm. The restaurant would seat 61 diners inside and 20 outside. Opposition came from several board members who said an Asian-themed exterior would not be appropriate for the neighborhood. Immediate neighbors objected to having a restaurant at that site, which can have only six parking spaces. One neighbor said the delivery truck noise and the proposed dumpster would create problems for his property. The issue was postponed until new drawings of the …

The Salem Ferry may be back ferrying commuters and visitors to and from Boston's Long Wharf by Memorial Day, giving Swampscott residents a nearby sea route option for travel to Boston. Kathleen Winn, the deputy director of the city's Planning and Community Development Department, said the city staff is reviewing the options after it received a proposal from Boston Harbor Cruises to operate the city-owned boat. But Salem already has a ferry operator under contract. Boston's Best Cruises, the former operator, suspended running the ferry last fall because of high fuel costs and low ridership. Its web site still lists the Salem Ferry as one of its routes. And it offers tickets at $19 for a round-trip ticket from Salem to Boston. But when one…

Yes or no to pho?
A Zoning Board of Appeals meeting last week sent a proposed Vietnamese restaurant at 286 Humphrey Street back to the drawing board. The applicants, Nam Nguyen and Tho Thi Lam-Nguyen, will need to return with more plans before they secure a permit to renovate the building, formerly occupied by an insurance company and law firm. The restaurant would seat 61 diners inside and 20 outside. The proposal was met with opposition from some neighbors. One neighbor said the delivery truck noise and the proposed dumpster would create problems for his property. The Swampscott restaurant plans to serve a variety of traditional fare including a Vietnamese specialty called pho, a soup with rice noodles, chicken or beef, vegetables, bean sprouts, lime, …

Zoning Board of Appeals postpones hearing from complaining neighbors about the Villas at Vaughan Place.
Swampscott's first senior independent living condominium project, the Villas at Vaughan Place, got a compliment Wednesday night on its presentation of likely traffic issues for the project. But it ran into opposition from members of the Zoning Board of Appeals who said they did not understand the proposed storm water drainage plans for the project. “That was the best presentation on traffic issues that I believe we have ever had,” ZBA Vice Chairman Daniel Doherty told traffic engineer Robert Woodland. Woodland made a short presentation that projected there would be only four car trips by residents of the new condos during rush hour. Neither the board nor any of the neighbors were as happy with plans for handling storm water at the site. …

The owner of a Humphrey Street property will go before the zoning bord Wednesday to seek permits for a Vietnamese Restaurant.
Kevin Nguyen will seek a special-use permit for inside and outside seating as well as parking relief and other items when he appears before the zoning board on Wednesday. The restaurant owner wants to bring Vietnamese cuisine to 286 Humphrey Street in the space now occupied by Beatrice Insurance. If all goes, well, he told Patch earlier this year, he will open his Vietnamese Cuisine and Sushi Bar in January. Nguyen appeared before selectmen earlier this year seeking approval to serve beer, wine and liquor. Board members said they welcome a new business on Humphrey but opted to wait until the restaurant got its approvals from the Zoning Board of Appeals before they took up his spirits request. The ZBA agenda says Nguyen and Tho Thi Lam-…
