Stacked container cars will form a building for the set, enclosing the pool which will be set off the ground.
The Grown Ups 2 movie set at Phillips Park will include an "in-ground pool" set well above ground. Ten-foot-high shipping container cars stacked at Phillips Park Thursday were forming walls for the Hollywood set being constructed on the practice football field behind the Bertram House. The set will host multiple days of filming pool scenes. These scenes were once targeted for Piper Field in Marblehead but are now to be shot in Swampscott. The set construction has a long ways to go before any stars in the movie cast that includes Adam Sandler, David Spade, Taylor Lautner, Chris Rock and Salma Hayek float, flop or swim in a pool. When they do take to the water, the action will be off the ground on an elevated pool set inside those shipping…

The production continues Friday and Saturday night at 7 at Swampscott High School.
At rehearsal last week the Godspell cast streamed down the Swampscott High auditorium aisles to the stage, making a group entrance. On stage they danced with each other and sang to each other, engaging each other in preparation for engaging the audience when the show opens Thursday night. At one point in the production, Jesus, played by sophomore Scott Walker, will enter the audience. "It's all about community building," Scott said of the musical. Any musical or theater production brings the cast together but this production of Godspell takes togetherness a step closer, cast members said. For one, the students traveled to New York City for a workshop with a cast member of the Broadway production of Godspell. The trip brought them closer …

Plenty of Swampscott people are Boston bound this weekend to land an extra role in the Grown Ups 2 movie to be shot in town.
They hope the extras’ line isn’t extra long but will wait for their shot to appear in the movie. The movie is Grown Ups 2, and much of it will be filmed in Swampscott this summer. The line is an open casting call line in Boston — today and tomorrow — and standing in it will be a number of Swampscott kids and adults, even a baby. Christine Hopkins of Swampscott is sacrificing her Mother’s Day for her 13-year-old son, Stephen, because he really wants to try for an extra role. Stephen, who has relished his parts in Swampscott Middle School plays including Snow Show and School Daze, has been counting the days until Sunday. Day dreaming about it and crossing off dates on his bedroom calendar. Mom figures many many kids will arrive for the …

The Adam Sandler sequel to Grown Ups begins filming later this month in Swampscott and Marblehead. Open casting will be held this weekend.
Selectmen told the location scout for Grown Ups 2 when they met last month that they field a common question from residents: How do you become an extra for the Adam Sandler movie Grown Ups 2? The answer is to go to the open casting call this weekend in Boston. The casting call is Saturday and Sunday, May 12 and 13, between 10 am and 4 pm at Carson Place @ The Boston Teacherʼs Union Hall, 180 Mt. Vernon St., Dorchester, MA 02125 (near the Bayside Expo Center), according to Sande Alessi Casting of Boston. The casting company recommends that prospective extras bring a pen and a current 4X6 color snapshot. Not a professional photograph. The company will not be taking photographs, their open call states. The extras are paid. And the casting …

A scene in the surf at Whales Beach for a 1917 movie that featured Silent Movie Era star Mary Pickford had to be reshot after a Swampscott fisherman splashed onto the set.
The North Shore, in general, and Swampscott, in particular, have a rich history serving as the setting for movies going back to 1917. Movies, or at least the filming of them, must have been a novelty in these parts back in 1917. Swampscott historian Lou Gallo says that a local fisherman made an impromptu appearance on the set of the Pride of the Clan starring Mary Pickford — a huge star in the early years of film and its silent movies. A scene for the movie was shot on Whales Beach in Swampscott and placed drowning Mary Pickford in the surf. A Swampscott fisherman witnessed the action and did not realize it was from the world of make believe. He went into the surf to pluck the starlet from the water and the scene needed reshooting, said …
The movie script is being rewritten and calls for less filming at the Swampscott Middle School but more filming elsewhere in town.
A location manager for Columbia Pictures says about half of the Adam Sandler movie Grown Ups 2 is planned to be filmed in Swampscott and about half in Marblehead. The manager, Charles Harrington, who spoke to the Swampscott School Committee Wednesday, also urged interested Swampscott residents to attend the open casting call for extras being held this weekend in Boston. There are many extras being used in the film, he said. Filming will take place for much of the summer. He said in an interview that movie producers want Grown Ups 2 to be an exciting experience for people in town and having a role as an extra would be a great way to be part of the experience. The location manager told School Committee members that there will not be as …
