Whiz Kid: Alexa Baldacci

The senior is a whirlwind, slicing through the water in the pool and kicking high on the dance floor.

Alexa Baldacci moves.

The Swampscott High senior’s energy and enthusiasm bound and spill forth on land and water.

She captains her school swim team.

She started swimming as a freshman and discovered she was pretty good.

“So since then I’ve been swimming like crazy,” she said.

Alexa, an NEC all-star, swims sprints — 50- and 100-yard freestyle sprints.

The events fit her personality, straight ahead and energetic.

On the dance floor, her excitement pours forth, says Swampscott High Dance Team Coach Danielle Lannon.

“She completely lights up on the stage; I could watch her dance all day!”

Alexa has danced all four years of high school.

“I have watched her grow into a beautiful, confident young woman and a very talented dancer and leader,” the coach said.

She helps and motivates her teammates just as she was helped and motivated by Marni Copeland, an upperclassman when Alexa started out on the team.

At a recent rehearsal, as the teammates prepared for the school’s Dancing With The Staff event, Alexa showed the dancers how to make their entrance in the introductory number.

As much as anything, her happy-to-be-dancing floor presence pushed the dance number forward.

“Once I get into a dance studio I forget about anything that I was stressed out about, drama at school ...,” she said, “and the only thing that matters is the next eight count.”

And having fun. The teammates dance, joke and tell stories. Dancing and joking.

In the classroom, Alexa adores math and physics.

“I love doing a lot of messy work to produce a clean answer ... I just love it,” she said.

Other loves include family, ice cream and Italian food, especially pasta and her grandfather’s tomato sauce.

Food equals love in her Italian family and the list of foods she loves could fill chapters.

“ Since I swim, I eat like a professional football player,” she said.

Her determination and energy could fill chapters, too.

She lists Hermione from the Harry Potter series, a muggle who worked her way to being one of the most brilliant witches at Hogwarts, as an influence.

Looking to the future, she is headed to college.

She wants to learn everything there is to know. And travel abroad.

She is dancing into the future with a swimming personality.

She wants a future like her past —  "filled with loved ones, good Italian food, travel, and Fanfarlo songs ... .”
