Weekly Recycling On Hold Until October
Town Administrator Thomas Younger said he wants to gauge the financial impact of additional recycling before he commits to it.
The town will move to its two-barrel trash pick-up limit on July 16, but weekly recycling will have to wait until at least October.
Town Administrator Thomas Younger told selectmen on Wednesday that he wants to review town finances over the next three months to see if it can afford weekly recycling.
The town has biweekly recycling.
Some residents have lobbied for weekly recycling since the new waste reduction program took effect last October.
The Board of Health learned last month that the move from biweekly to weekly curbside pick-up of recycled materials would cost an additional $38,000 in Fiscal 2013.
Fiscal year 2013 started July 1.

Why doesn't the town earmark all that money that is being paid by the movie company for keeping the town cleaner? Use it to pay for the additional recycling.

Glad to see that Mr. Younger wants to analyze the financial impact, hopefully we will get a full detailing of the cost impact that wasn't forthcoming from the BOH.

two barrel limit should have been put off at least till october just as the weekly recycling has been put off.

The town manager has made a wise decision not to jump at spending an additional $38,000 a year for weekly recycling pick-up. For those who accumulate more recyclable material -- which is great --, just get another container.
I still have a few neighbors who don't recycle, so having weekly pick up won't change their habit. What happened to the proposal that if citizens didn't put out recycling, the town would not pick up their trash? A sticker to that effect left on their trash at the curb for one week might get some action. Be daring; try it. Will cause some initial flack, but it will at least get the attention of those who don't recycle. Should convert them fast if they want their trash picked up.

Ah yes Reggie, just nudge the masses into doing something they don't want to do. Just don't take their trash away, that ought to get the result you want. One little problem with that Reggie, they are taxpayers and are paying to have their trash removed wether there is a blue bin in front of their house or not. In the previous recycling article we were told we would only be able to throw out two trash barrels for free. I don't know who gets their trash picked up for free in this town but I would like to get that deal, finally Reggie do you really think it's your business to check all your neighbors houses every trash day to see if they recycle or not? I'm sure they are adults and can make their own decisions

We recycle everything and I found the containers too small and a BIG pain. Buying 2 llarge wheeled trash cans and getting stickers from town (one for paper and one for glass, cans ,etc) makes it easy. No carrying, nothing falls out and things stay dry. Putting them out to curb is easy as well since wheeling means anyone can handle them. I bought the cheaper cans , not the heavy duty ones and after 2 years they are still great. Minor expense and major help. Every other week is not a problem with the large size cans.
