Student Laptops To Get A Look

The School Committee will talk about the idea at a future meeting.

At last week's School Committee meeting, member Jaren Landen raised the issue of how the schools were going to deal with the proliferation of personal electronic devices like Kindles and Nooks in school.

She said the committee should develop a policy for all schools.

Landen also said the district should begin to develop a long-range strategy for providing each student with a laptop computer. She joked that the district could pay for the equipment out of the new money the state would give them when they increased the funding level for the district.

MIS Director Kevin Kaczynski said the district staff is looking at the issue. He noted that Beverly schools have purchased laptops for every high school student, who pay a lease fee for the computers.

David Bromberg, the student liaison to the committee, said laptops would not be needed for some classes and thus having a laptop for every student was not a high priority since the students already have access to computers at home and at school.

Landen said she would like the district to “embrace all these great technologies. A lot of tools can be used to extend learning.”

The issue will be discussed by the committee at a future meeting.

Why don't they just standardize on Kindles? Some are under $100 a piece and all are under $200 a piece, pretty reliable, long battery life, and can have lots of books. Laptops run out of power frequently and are over $500 each.
