Firefighters battled a major blaze at 50 Andrew Road this morning, containing it to the lot in bitter cold temperatures.

No one was home when smoke was spotted about 9:15 a.m., said Deputy Chief Jim Potts.

The family dog was lost in the blaze, he said.

One Swampscott firefighter injured his hand and was transported to the hospital for treatment, he said.

Firefighters arriving on the scene entered the house but were pulled back when the nearby fire hydrant froze and they were without water, the deputy chief said.

Firefighters then hooked up to other hydrants on Paradise Road and pounded the blaze with water. They were delayed by minutes due to the frozen hydrant, said Potts. It's hard to tell exactly how long, he said, because minutes can feel like hours when fighting a fire.

Firefighters including those from Lynn, Salem, Marblehead, Revere and Beverly were assisting Swampscott.
