Officer Hennessey Wins His Third Enforcement Award

The Swampscott officer received a 2010 Drive For Life Award for his leadership enforcing drunk driving laws.

Swampscott Police Officer Thomas Hennessey was recognized on May 17, by Mothers Against Drunk Driving  and was a recipient of MADD’s 2010 Drive for Life Award.

The award is presented to a select number of police officers across the state, recognizing their excellence and leadership in drunk driving enforcement.

The ceremony was held at the Devens Common Hotel in Devens, Massachusetts.

The featured speaker was Ron Bersani, grandfather of 13-year-old  Melanie Powell.

Melanie was tragically killed by a drunk driver while walking to a birthday party on a Friday afternoon.

Mr. Bersani and his family successfully lobbied the Legislature to strengthen Massachusetts drunk driving laws with the passage of Melanie’s Law.

Officer Hennessey is a three-time recipient of the award, also being recognized in 2005 and 2009.

Officer Hennessey is a 12-year veteran of the police department.

 The Swampscott Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety of all town residents and believes that through education and enforcement of the drunk driving laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts we will achieve this goal.
