UPDATED: Liquor Store Proposed for Burrill Street
The Zoning Board of Appeals is scheduled to take up the request on Wednesday night.
A prospective business owner will seek a special use permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals on Wednesday to operate a "high-end" liquor store.
The ZBA meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Swampscott Senior Center.
Railroad Liquors LLC has petitioned the ZBA for the permit at 205 Burrill St., near the Swampscott Train Station.
The store would need another approval before the establishment opened, said the town administrator.
"The Board of Selectmen would still need to vote to approve an alcohol license for that establishment at a future public hearing if a special use permit is issued by the ZBA," Town Administrator Tom Younger said.
The Burrill Street property, owned by JB Capital LLC, has been vacant for about a year and a half.
The last business at the location was The Cup N Board coffee and specialty food shop.
Ten months after opening its door to commuters and customers, The Cup N Board closed, unable to weather the weak economy and faced with limited parking.

If a new store is not needed, it will go out of business. Taking into an account that 2 existing liquor stores are not centers of the criminal activities or disturbances, it is not clear what your objection is based upon.

I am pretty sure there are at least 20 other uses for that building that would be better..... high end or not it seems like a terrible idea

It seems that the issue is not selection of one of '20 other uses' but an approval (or disapproval) of a SINGLE business proposal. An alternative to this 'terrible idea' is to have a dilapidated empty space which is not bringing any taxes.

Have to point out that The Cup N Board sold beer and wine and didn't close because of the economy but because they were constantly vandalized.

I think this would be a great idea. There are many new condos on the street and lots of commuters coming off of the train. A craft liquor store would be a nice addition. Besides, they have been selling alcohol there for 20+ years.

It was fine when it was a store where train commuters could get coffee, newspapers, etc., and local neighbors could pick up convenience items. There is no need for another liquor store.

Sounds nice except that there are numerous places selling newspapers (not that newspapers are such a hot item nowadays), convenience items, etc. within 5 minutes drive from the area (4 supermarkets, CVS, Walgreens, Home Goods, Marshalls, TJX, Target), which would make store you described financially unsustainable.

The fact of the matter is that teenagers have been hanging around under the bridge for years and years and the last thing we need is a liquor store on their playground doorstep.

Perhaps the owners should open a jungle gym to help the kids get off the street and keep them safe.

I did not see them 'hanging around under the bridge' for the last 17+ years and a liquor store will not sell stuff to the teenagers so what's the big deal anyway? Or are you implying that the store owners are going to violate the law?

I have lived in Swampscott for over 20 years and have never seen any Teenagers hanging around under that bridge. I certainly wouldn't call it their "playground". Hilarious.

Well, I lived in Swampscott over 50 years, I went to all the Swampscott public schools, my 4 kids went to all the public schools, I lived in that particular area over 15 years, and my friends congregated there as well as my kids friends. If the kids aren't hanging out there anymore then the Swampscott police finally solved the problems they were causing.

I love the idea, hopefully it will be a success and make the Town of Swampscott proud.
This Town and its citizens should show more support for businesses and those that choose to invest their capital here.
