Grown Ups 2 Financed Athletic Field Work Progressing
The practice football field, used as a temporary sound stage over the summer, has been dug up and fitted with drainage and new irrigation.
Contractors are restoring the practice football field and half the soccer field that Columbia Pictures rented from the town for Grown Ups 2 filming over the summer.
Public Works Director Gino Cresta said crews have in recent weeks dug up the practice field with heavy equipment then mixed soil and sand for better drainage.
They also installed a new irrigation system.
The field will have the same dimensions as the former practice field. But the holes and dips in the field will be filled and leveled and a crown will shed water.
Meanwhile, on the abutting soccer field, crews replaced the irrigation system, leveled the surface and reseeded it.
The Charlotte Road field has been overseeded, again, as it rests in preparation for use next year.
Work is being done by Timberline Buidling Specialists out of Hampton, Mass.
Town fields being played upon this fall including Blocksidge at Phillips Park and Upper Jackson at the high school are showing signs of excessive wear.

Good to see the grass field are somewhat being reparied. Lets talk about a TURF FIELD. It is crazy that a town like Swampscott doesnt have a truf field. The academics, schools, people in this town more than deserve the best athletic facilities. Lets go...We are wya behind the times here. A lot of places have two or three turf fields!!!

I have to agree. Town fields are a joke and even dangerous. Yes it is true that recreation and sports expenditure should be carefully considered against other needs, but this is over-the-top bad.

Look at the Beverly football field. It is grass, but it is maintained well, has nice bleachers on both sides, good grass, clear painting. Why can we make something like this in Swampscott? It is not going to be so expensive like a turf field, but still looks professional.

What about the Hurd Stadium in Beverly?

Hurd gets little use in summer and has irrigation. After heavy use It gets slice seeded and is given a break to grow back in. fertilized quiet often. Most of the sports fields are treated the same. The same guy that seeds, ferts and applies the pesticides/herbicides also paints hurd. He has Stencils for the #, letters, a paint spray machine for the lines. Two guys cut it twice a week when the fert. kicks in, clippings are not always picked up and the patterns you see in the grass are from cutting in the same direction, grass is easy.
