St. John's Finishes Strong December 8, 2012
At the Swampscott Middle School, the Boys Bantams took on defending league champion, St. Rafael of Medford. Led by eight second half points by Jake Goldman, St. John's took the win.
Simon Keough got things started with a basket and then an assist to Cole Cassidy. Cassidy would score two more times sandwiched around a Ben Turner basket as St. John's jumped out to a 10-2 lead. After a Medford hoop, Zach Elwell followed with a bank shot to make it 12-4 a little more than halfway into the first half. Keough extended the lead to double digits by grabbing an offensive rebound and putting it in to make it 20-9. Graham Templeman added two made free throws as St. John's headed to the half leading 22-12.
After a Ben Turner basket to open the second half, St. Rafael went on a 14-2 run to tie the game with 7:23 on the clock. With the defensive pressure on St. John's, guard Jake Goldman took over. He consistently broke the vaunted Medford press by dribbling past the defenders. Goldman scored twice on drives to the basket and ignited 10 straight St. John's points to make it 36-26 with 4:51 left. After a made Medford 3-pointer cut the lead to seven, Goldman scored again as St. John's scored the last 11 points of the game to take a 47-29 win.
For St. John's, Ben Turner finished with a double/double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. Jake Goldman finished with 10 points, 5 rebounds, and two assists to polish off the defending champs.
St. John's Stays Hot December 9, 2012
At the Breed Middle School in Lynn, the Boys Bantams took on St. Pius of Lynn. St. John's carried over their hot streak from the day before as they rolled to an easy win.
St. John's jumped to an early lead behind a Jake Goldman free throw and a Max Pegnato score. A Simon Keough drive followed by a Cole Cassidy jumper made it 9-4 with 11:04 on the clock. After a made Lynn basket, Justin DeSalvo got things rolling for St. John's with a hoop off a perfect pass by Zach Elwell. St. John's went with the small, fast lineup and they controlled the boards despite a height advantage from St. Pius. Max Pegnato (6 rebounds), Graham Templeman (5 rebounds), and Jake Goldman (5 rebounds) prevented any second chance scoring opportunities for St. Pius. Zach Elwell's driving hoop capped off a 12-0 run as St. John's led 21-6 with 5:35 to go in the half. The game quickly turned into a route as Simon Keough scored off a steal and Elwell (6 first half points) followed with a jumper to make it 29-10 at the half.
Cole Cassidy and Max Pegnato scored the first two baskets of the second half as St. John's pulled away. Justin Ratner's late basket put the icing on the cake as St. John's won big.
For St. John's, the win was a total team effort as every player had at least a point, rebound, or assist. Max Pegnato (12 points), Cole Cassidy (10points) and Simon Keough (10 points) each had double figure for St. John's. Zach Elwell had a solid all around game with 8 points, 6 rebounds, and two assists.
Swampscott Wins Battle of St. John's December 8, 2012
At the Swampscott Middle School, the Boys Cadets took on St. John's of Peabody. Swampscott jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they won easily 33-24.
It took just 20 seconds for Matt Moran to feed Gavin Sullivan on a give and go to give Swampscott the lead. This ignited a 10-2 run to start the game after a Noah Carreiro offensive putback at the 10:12 mark. Peabody cut the lead to four before Will Cruger banked in a left handed shot to make it 12-6 with 4:37 left in the half. A Chad Swigor turnaround jumper followed by a Ben Conner driving hoop sent Swampscott to the half with a 16-8 lead.
Both teams tightened up the defensive pressure to start the second half. Chad Swigor broke a scoreless second half with a 3-pointer to make it 19-8 with 10:44 to go. Back to back Matty Moran baskets on feeds from Will Cruger and Max Emmerich extended the Swampscott lead to 17 points at the 7:56 mark. From there, Swampscott cruised to their first win of the season.
Matt Moran led St. John's of Swampscott with 8 points and seven rebounds. Chad Swigor (5 points, 7 rebounds) and Noah Carreiro (6 points and 4 rebounds) also played well in the victory.
St. John's Drops OT Thriller December 9, 2012
At the Breed Middle School in Lynn, the Boys Cadets took on perennial league powerhouse St. Pius of Lynn, a team that has lost only 4 regular season games in the last two years. It was a seesaw battle the whole way until St. Pius pulled away in overtime for the win.
After a St. Pius basket to start the game, Chad Swigor answered with a 3-pointer to give St. John's the lead. Gavin Sullian followed with a made free throw and then a fall away jumper to make it 6-2 just 2:31 into the game. Ben Conner maintained the four point lead with a baseline jumper at the 10:22 mark. St. Pius answered back with six straight points to take the lead. Matty Moran answered on a feed from Max Emmerich to even the game. St. John's was playing an agressive 2-3 zone defense and packing it in to prevent second chance baskets. But both teams matched basket for basket. Six Ben Conner points followed by a Chad Swigor basket gave St. John's a 20-17 lead with 47 seconds left in the half. A late 3-pointer sent the game into the half tied at 20.
St. Pius took the early lead until a Jake McIntire drive evened it with 11:12 left. After matching baskets, St. Pius went on a 5 point run for a 29-24 lead. But St. John's answered back. A Chad Swigor bank shot pulled them within one point with 7:23 left in the game. St. Pius countered with eight straight points to seemingly put the game away. But St. John's wouldn't go down without a fight. Two made Matt Moran free throws were followed by a Ben Conner jumper to make it 37-32 with 3:36 to go. After a big defensive stop, Gavin Sulllivan found Max Emmerich open on the left wing. Emmerich drained a huge 3-pointer to pull St. John's within two points with 1:55 left. With 51 seconds on the clock, Gavin Sullivan came up with a steal and took it the length of the court for a basket to even the score at 37. St. Pius ran the clock down to 14 seconds before calling a time-out to set up a final shot. After a miss, St. Pius came up with a second chance but the shot didn't fall and the two teams headed to overtime.
With four minutes on the clock, both teams came out tentatively. Matt Moran grabbed an offensive board and put it in to give St. John's the 39-37 lead with 2:28 left in OT. But, just 29 seconds later, Moran fouled out. St. Pius drained two late 3-pointers to put the game away and take a hard fought 47-39 win.
Ben Conner led St. John's with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Gavin Sullivan had 7 points and 11 rebounds. Chad Swigor added 7 points and Matt Moran had 9 rebounds in the tough loss for St. John's.
St. John's Takes Crosstown Battle December 8, 2012
At the Swampscott Middle School, the Girls Cadets took on St. Thomas of Nahant. The game was never close as St. John's grabbed an early lead and surged to a big win.
Jaymie Caponigro got things started with a coast to coast drive, followed by an offensive putback, and then a lay-up on a pass from Gabby LaRiviere to make it 6-0. With Nahant trying to get back into the game, Ellie Wright hit back to back jumpers on passes from Veronica Rizzo to make it 13-6 with 8:58 left in the half. After a made St. Thomas basket, Caponigro scored 5 straight points to push the lead to double digits. Elizabeth Weisse extended the lead with an offensive putback and by the time Claire Powell hit a jumper, it was 13 points in a row for St. John's to make it 26-8 with 2:21 left in the half. Another Ellie Wright basket ended the half with St. John's holding a commanding 28-12 lead.
Things got no better for Nahant in the second half as St. John's put the game away. A Kasey Kennedy jumper along with a Kendall Rhodes steal and basket helped finish off St. Thomas. Veronica Rizzo's jumper finished an 18-2 spurt as Swampscott won easily.
Jaymie Caponigro led all scorers with 16 points to go along with 4 rebounds. Ellie Wright added 8 points and Maya Cueva had a strong game with 10 rebounds as St. John's got back on the winning track.
St. John's Drops Undefeated Match December 8, 2012
At the Swampscott Middle School, the Girls Bantams took on St. Francis of Medford in an early season match-up of undefeated teams.
St. Francis struck first, but then back to back baskets by Faye Parker and Olivia Matela put St. John's back on top. Medford countered with seven consecutive points to go back on top. St.John's would slowly work their way back. First Kayla Kornisky stole the ball and went the length of the court to pull within two. Faye Parker followed with an offensive putback to even the score. Katie Watts followed with a jumper as St. John's retook the lead with under 3 minutes left in the half. Two late St. Francis baskets sent St. John's into half-time trailing 16-14.
Medford looked to pull away early in the second half as they opened up a 22-14 lead. Fiona Herring started the comeback with a basket off a steal to make it 22-16 with 7:52 left. Trailing by six, Faye Parker came up with a big block which led to a Watts basket to cut the lead to 24-20 with 2:14 on the clock. St. John's wasn't through yet. Watts fed Parker to cut the lead to 24-22 with 56 seconds left in regulation. St. John's got the ball back and called a time-out with 38 seconds to go. A Swampscott turnover led to a made Medford free throw which proved the difference as St. Francis held on for a 25-22 win.
For St. John's, Faye Parker grabbed 17 rebounds but was held to 8 points. Swampscott held an overwhelming rebounding edge as Jillian Flanders had 6 rebounds and Mary Miles added 4 but it was not enough as St. John's dropped its first game of the year.
